Violeta Parra is a Spanish singer, songwriter and performer. She was born in Barcelona in 1962. After moving to Madrid, she formed the group "Los Peces", which released two albums, Peces (1983) and Peces II (1986), before splitting up in 1988. In 1991 she began a solo career, releasing her first album, Más Allá del Alba, with the help of producers including Luis Bacalov. The next year she married musician José María Cano.

In 1994 she moved to Berlin where she worked with European musicians such as Klaus Hoffmann, David Sylvian and Brian Eno, among others. Two years later she signed with Atlantic International Records and released a second album Dos Mundos (1996). In 1997 she reinvented her sound by adding a variety of worldbeat influences to her already eclectic musical style.

This musical transformation led to the release of the album Violeta Parra (1997), an album that went on to sell almost two million copies worldwide. It was followed by four more albums: Reina de Corazones (1999), Recuerdos de Amor (2001), Uno y Uno (2004) and La Armonía Perfecta (2008).
